- 설명: Throughout the 20th century, Latin American states have been invested in the promotion and management of different forms of expressive culture, in particular music and dance, as a means of fostering specific forms of ethnic pride and/or national belonging that are consistent with a particular regime’s political ideology and their accompanying social and economic agendas. Cultural policy has been a favorite, although not always effective, tool with which to shape and imagine the nation in the state’s image, most often through the use of symbolic declarations, the regulation of expressive culture through legislation, and the creation of cultural and educational institutions. This presentation will explore the transformation of cultural policy at the start of the twenty-first century, using a number of recent and interrelated case studies from Peru. In particular, the talk will focus on the impact that international cultural policy regarding Intangible Cultural Heritage and the emergence of a new neoliberal form of multiculturalism in Peru are having on the articulation and implementation of cultural policy.

- 설명: This session will focus on the politics of translating and publishing Latin American novels in the U.S. in the years following the Cuban Revolution, when the so-called literary Boom, represented by authors such as Cortázar, Donoso, Fuentes, García Márquez, and Vargas Llosa, rose to international acclaim. In particular, I will examine the politics motivating philanthropic organizations such as the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, whose political interests were often aligned with those of the Cold War State, as they funded translation subsidy programs, which, in turn, paradoxically supported the publication of works by writers whose politics were often antithetical to those of the foundations.

Canger argues that the variety of Nawatl spoken in the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, was the result of the convergence of a number of dialects spoken by people who had flocked to the city from the provinces. Una Canger is a professor emeritus of Native American Languages and Cultures at Copenhagen University and the recipient of Mexico’s Order of the Aztec Eagle for her cultural contributions. Dan Kammen is the Class of 1935 Distinguished Professor of Energy in the Energy and Resources Group, the Goldman School of Public Policy, and the Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley. Almost 40% of the world’s Catholics live in Latin America, but the church has been losing ground steadily in recent years as Pentecostal and neo Pentecostal churches have gained significant numbers of adherents and competed successfully for public space and a legitimate position as representatives of “religion” in public affairs. The pope’s public statements and actions to this date underscore a desire to reach out in new ways and to begin reforms of the institutions of the Vatican. The question is whether these initiatives and reforms can begin to stem the losses and reposition the Catholic Church for the future in what is now a highly competitive and plural arena. What happens in Latin America must also be seen in the broader context of the global south, which is now the great arena of religious competition and expansion.

- 설명: Join us for a presentation with Professor Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui, Visiting Andrés Bello Chair of Latin American Literature and Culture at New York University and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology Department at Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. Professor Rivera is a renowned Bolivian sociologist, historian, theorist, and activist of Aymara descent that has been extensively involved in indigenous social movements. A recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship and a prolific author, Professor Rivera has written ten books, numerous articles for journals and magazines, and has produced documentaries and feature films. She was recently named as one of the three most influential writers of Bolivia in the last thirty years.
The massive popular protests and rallies that took place in Bolivia between 2000-2005, which eventually led to the rise of MAS (Movimiento al Socialismo) and Evo Morales to State power in 2006, have stirred a wave of expectations and hopes for change in the anti/globalization scene around the world, and specially among the popular and indigenous movements in Latin America. Nevertheless, the continuity of a policy of State centralization, classic developmental schemes and elite management of State affairs have soon led to a frustrating sense of cosmetic changes; meanwhile the pervasive influence of transnational corporations and predatory capitalism has remained unchallenged. The presentation will focus in the potentialities and limits of the discourse of ethnicity in Bolivia, with comparative remarks with the cases of the Reservas Extractivistas in the northern Amazonian region of Brazil and the Asambleas Ciudadanas against environmental depredation in Argentina.

Sue's research focuses on immigration and comparative race/ethnicity (specifically identity formation, multiracialism, intermarriage, race, relations, and racial ideology), with a focus on the United States and Latin America. In this talk, Sue will discuss findings from her recent book, Land of the Cosmic Race: Race Mixture, Racism, and Blackness in Mexico, to inform the current debate over colorblindness. Colorblindness, which emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century, has become the dominant racial ideology in the United States. Supporters view colorblind ideology and related practices as an important antidote to race-conscious data gathering, affirmative action, and racial identity politics, which they perceive as fueling racism. However, opponents argue that the race-evasiveness of colorblindness is detrimental and has led to the further entrenchment of racism. As this debate continues to rage in the United States, little attention is being paid to its neighbor to the south - Mexico - which has adopted and institutionalized practices of colorblindness for nearly a century. The lack of attention to the Mexican case is unfortunate since the United States could learn a great deal from Mexico's long-standing social experiment with colorblindness.

- 설명: The rise of emerging markets challenges expectations on employment prospects, usually shaped by scholarship produced in the so-called developed countries. The expansion of formally protected job contracts amidst a generalized shortage of occupational opportunities correlates with an increasing commodification on job search and recruitment mechanisms in the so-called less developed countries. Evidences from comparative data show that Brazil, Mexico and South Africa have become crucial players when it comes to temporary jobs business, side by side with traditional ones as US, UK, Spain, Netherlands and Japan. This move echoes the recent reconfigurations of job opportunities mainly for youngest and better-educated workers, as far as reflects important changes in the international division of responsibilities on temp jobs provision. The presentation will deal with this new scenario. Firstly, scrutinizing it in an international comparative perspective, based upon data from the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies for 2008-2010; goals are two folded: identify national tendencies, as well as explore labor force profile and human resource management characteristics. Secondly, and using detailed information for Brazil, exemplifying how this process, (i) nourished a new entrepreneurship on this economic segment, (ii) improved market governance in a social fabric previously dominated by personal networks when it came to searching and finding jobs and (iii) expanded new employment relations (intermediated ones) in a pace even more accelerated than the remarkable growth of protected employment observed in contemporary Brazil.

2. 스페셜 시리즈 : 아마존의 원주민들 **Special Series: 'Indigenous Amazonia'**
This term, the Centre of Latin American Studies and the Division of Social Anthropology bring you a special treat. Starting on the 27 January every Monday evening a specialist in the anthropology of Indigenous Amazonia will speak at CLAS. The occasion for this series of seminars was provided by the residence in Cambridge of two of the foremost ethnographers of Amazon peoples: Aparecida Vilaça and Carlos Fausto. Both have come from Brazil to spend the term as visiting fellows, at CRASSH and CLAS respectively, and we have grasped the opportunity for regional dialogue by inviting other anthropologists of Amazonia, from Cambridge and beyond, to present as well.
The series begins with a paper by Dr Stephen Hugh-Jones who, in the 1960s, was among the first British anthropologists to conduct fieldwork in the Amazon region; his awesome depth of knowledge is matched by his commitment to ongoing engagement with the peoples of North West Amazonia, alongside whom he voyaged just last year. Professor Peter Gow, famous for his work on myth and kinship among the peoples of Peru’s Andean foothills, will then join us for an intriguing and no doubt iconoclastic look at the apparently mundane matter of food processing. Dr Carlos Fausto, whose masterful ethnography of Parakanã warfare and shamanism has recently been published by CUP will then speak on a very different topic: “the ordinary utopia of living well”. The following week, Dr Vilaça will speak about Wari’ people’s relationship to Christian missionaries, which is the subject of her eagerly awaited forthcoming book. Finally, Cambridge’s Dr Françoise Barbira-Freedman and Johanna Gonçalves bring us papers on networks of shamanic knowledge exchange, and on the paths Yanomami people walk in pursuit of white medicine.
